I grew up in the lakes and streams of the upper Midwest, where I spent countless mornings drifting on fog-covered lakes while listening to the loons and sipping hot coffee. During these formative years, my interests in woodworking and the outdoors coalesced when I made my first canoe paddle. Since that pivotal moment, carving paddles has been a frequent way to ground myself and find joy in a familiar process. While those midwestern lakes and loon calls are a thousand miles away, I still think about them frequently. Today, each paddle I make is a humble effort to reach towards the grace that can be found while drifting through the mist on those quiet mornings. To me these paddles are more than tools to push ourselves across water, they’re a physical reminder of those slow mornings with hot coffee, calm water, and a clear mind.
